The Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) is a national professional association that works to protect the health of all Canadians by providing certification, education, and ongoing professional competencies to environmental public health professionals (EPHPs), also known as public health inspectors (PHIs) and environmental health officers (EHOs). The EPHPs we represent play a vital role in keeping our water, food, land, air, and facilities safe.

Any addition of undesirable substances to groundwater caused by human activities is considered to be contamination. It has often been assumed that contaminants left on or under the ground will stay there. This has been shown to be wishful thinking. Groundwater often spreads the effects of dumps and spills far beyond the site of the original contamination. Groundwater contamination is extremely difficult, and sometimes impossible, to clean up.

The purpose of the Nova Scotia Operational Guidelines for Aquatic Facilities is to set minimum industry operational standards for the Nova Scotia Aquatic Industry and to provide guidance to aquatic facilities’ operational Aquatic Safety Plans. It is intended to assist facility owners, operators and staff to identify facility-specific hazards, and to understand roles, responsibilities and standard
operating procedures that will encourage safe effective pool operation. The overall objective is to
reduce and prevent patron illness, injury, and death.

Aquatic Facilities offer great opportunities for physical activities and recreation but also present serious health hazards if not managed and maintained properly. These hazards include exposure to bacteria, chemicals and physical conditions that may lead to illness or injury.
