Data Sources and Tools

This guide highlights useful tools for data analysis, primarily those available to CBU users or freely and openly accessible.

CBU Supported Software

 

Microsoft- CBU has an enterprise license to Microsoft products including Email,  Word, Excel, etc.  You can login and use the products online OR download them if you prefer to use the applications on your computer
CBU IT services offers and supports several software packages,  including SPSS, MatLAB, R and more. You can find and download software here: CBU Software
Qualtrics survey software: CBU has institutional license for Qualtrics
  All Computer Labs at CBU have a variety of software installed including SPSS, Adobe Reader and more. For a full list, visit the IT page.
 
ArcGIS: CBU has 100 licenses for ArcGIS, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Business Analyst Online, and more. Contact martin_chandler@cbu.ca for more info/access.

 

Other software

Data Skills Modules

The UK Data Service provides introductory level interactive modules. They include key aspects of survey, longitudinal, aggregate data and  there is a module on how to get started with preparing survey data for analysis.

GIS Software

ArcGIS is a mapping platform through which you can create, analyze, and share mapped data, scenes, apps, and layers.  Great for visualizing and assessing community demographics, resources, and needs! CBU includes access to ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro, the desktop software, as well as several analytics apps and StoryMaps. You may be introduced to ArcGIS in one or more of your courses, but if not and you are interested in learning on your own, contact me for access and check out:

QGIS is a free, open source GIS software with robust capabilities and a thriving online community. It does not have the same online use as ArcGIS, however it has more available tools for analysis.

Cartographic Boundary Files

Canadian census boundary files for small geographies are available through Statistics Canada here. Older boundary files are available to CBU users through CBU's Data Liberation Initiative[DLI] license. For more information contact Martin Chandler.
