What are Scholarly Articles?


Your professor has probably asked you to use scholarly or academic articles in your research.  Why?

  1. Authoritative - authors are knowledgeable and well-versed in topic
  2. Scutinized and review prior to publication
  3. Place where new research is revealed and shared
  4. Published more frequently than books (information may be more current)
  5. Can direct you to more information (bibliographies)
  6. Sources for illustrative examples to support research
     

What to look for:

  1. Authors' affiliations (university where research took place)
  2. Often an abstract (summary) is present
  3. Provides a bibliography and footnotes
  4. Usual format consists of an introduction, literature reviewed, methodology, discussion, conclusion
